Cincinnati Breast Plate
Badge typically worn in Patrolman Nuttle's era.

On June 10, 1861, Patrolman Nuttle heard a dispute at 8th Street and Broadway and responded there and found Arthur Hughes in a dispute with another man.  Officer Nuttle warned Hughes to quiet down or he would be arrested.  Hughes advanced on the officer and a fight ensued during which Hughes stabbed Patrolman Nuttle to death.

Hughes was tried for Murder, found guilty, and given a sentence of ten years.  An author wrote:

“The officer was in the discharge of his duty at the time he was killed; and it seems that such a slight punishment is a sign that we think very little of the lives of those who guard our property and protect our persons from harm, while we sleep.  While several watchmen have been murdered in the most cruel and brutal manner, never has there been a man executed for the crime.”

We have very little Information on Patrolman Nuttle. If you have further information, artifacts, or pictures of this officer, please contact the Museum Director at Director@GCPHS.com.
