On June 19, 1948, Patrolman Hughes, a World War II veteran of 51 W. Corry Street, failed to return to the stationhouse at the end of his shift.  The rest of the shift re-entered the field, along with all the officers on the next shift, to locate him.  They found his body and wrecked motorcycle in the 5900 block of Kellogg Avenue.  He was dead on arrival at General Hospital.  The investigation revealed he had been chasing a speeder and crashed into a taxicab and died from a fractured skull and crushed pelvis.

Patrolman Hughes’s funeral was held at Busse & Borgman funeral home and from there he was buried on June 22, 1948, in Spring Grove Cemetery.  Six fellow motorcycle officers served as pall bearers; including Patrolman Andrew Boehnlein, at whose recent wedding Patrolman Hughes had served as best man. 

Patrolman Hughes left a wife, Virginia, with whom he had recently celebrated their ten year anniversary.
